about tsukishima’s injury

gatchaman-hajiime:

While I’m in pain and suffering due to the newest Haikyuu!! chapter, I thought I’d just make a simple meta about it; it is a incredibly good move for Furudate to develop Tsukishima even if it is painful to see our tol blonde beanpole suffer, it is still a very good opportunity for A+ character development, and I fully trust Furudate to develop Tsukishima extremely well, if either positive or negative.

I also apologize beforehand if this is somewhat messy!!

Also; Don’t blame Ushijima for Tsukishima’s injury. Don’t. Please.

Hey, listen me out before accusing Furudate of giving Tsukishima only “the injury arc and pain and suffering” [ this is meant in a way meant to antagonize Furudate btw ] because well, if he does, it isn’t out of malice for Tsukishima.

 | Tsukishima feels betrayed by volleyball due to Akiteru and Tsukishima’s idolization of Akiteru. Tsukishima thought of Akiteru as this cool older big brother that Tsukishima was very close to, and from manga chapters, he did brag to his classmates about Akiteru [ if I remember correctly ]. And when Tsukishima is told that his classmate went to a Karasuno match and there wasn’t even a Tsukishima on the starting line up; Kei didn’t believe them, having such faith in Akiteru who was basically Kei’s role model and hero of sorts.

But when Tsukishima sees it for himself; sees Akiteru in the bleachers, not even on the team as a reserve, Tsukishima feels betrayed and somewhat pathetic. Like Tsukishima himself says, “It hit me like a ton of bricks,” Tsukishima loved his big brother, he looked up to him, and constantly wanted to hear about Akiteru’s adventures and volleyball career, and with Tsukishima’s character in consideration; he felt absolutely awful, he blamed himself for even looking up to someone, to think that someone - even his own brother - could be a hero to a young Tsukishima, Tsukishima felt pathetic. Tsukishima felt betrayed and angry, but both at himself and Akiteru.

 | Tsukishima is the only one in Karasuno that didn’t originally have a passion for playing volleyball; he is shown apathetic, not wanting to strain himself.. because enjoying himself and generally being enthusiastic about volleyball would only bring him pain; like Akiteru.

While Tsukishima now has a cold shoulder to Akiteru - which is fully understandable - it is impossible to deny that Akiteru hasn’t had a massive influence on the Tsukishima Kei we see at the beginning and through out till the Training Camp arc [ where Tsukishima is more thoroughly developed, as while Tsukishima hasn’t been neglected by Furudate at all, the Training Camp arc is where we start to see some real change, even if it is subtle ]

 | Earlier in the Shiratorizawa match, Tsukishima found his passion; he found his love for volleyball, he found his desire to play more and more with Karasuno. This is a significant thing, even more than people think; Tsukishima has been very heavily influenced by the mindset of “don’t strain yourself, don’t be passionate about it, it will only bring you pain and suffering,” due to Akiteru, and with the moment of the Shiratorizawa match that made him find his genuine love for volleyball; it is a indirect method of Tsukishima forgiving Akiteru as well as a very very important moment for Tsukishima.

No, but seriously, think about it; Akiteru loved volleyball, he was so passionate about it, and he ended up on the bleaches and cheering for Karasuno; which Kei eventually witnessed and lead to Kei’s origin of his apathy for volleyball and mind set. By openly showing passion and excitement, by being happy and enthusiastic about the sport he once idolized his brother for after his point; Tsukishima shows that he no longer holds his feelings of betrayal and anger towards Akiteru, that he has forgiven Akiteru. Maybe not completely, but he doesn’t have the same emotions towards him as when we first see them interact.

 | Which leads us to his injury and the bitter irony; Tsukishima had found his love for volleyball, and then Ushijima’s spike hits his fingers like that; Karasuno isn’t used to 5 set matches, especially a first year like Tsukishima which makes the injury almost even worse, because Tsukishima is already exhausted ontop of the injury.

The interesting thing will be to see if Tsukishima will revert back into his mindset of not trying and apathy + a sense of Tsukishima calling himself pathetic and a idiot for ever thinking that could go well.. Or if he will rise even stronger from his fall. Another thing is that Tsukishima will almost 99.9% be put on the bench in the next chapter, and I’m very curious to see how much faith he has in his teammates without him playing as his trust in them will be - and already is - put on the test with his injury as Tsukishima is a invaluable asset to Karasuno against such a powerhouse like Shiratorizawa.

I’m just as upset as everyone is that Tsukishima has to suffer, but please please view the depth in Furudate’s decision to injure Tsukishima and not hating on him for giving Tsukishima “a injury arc!! that!! makes!! no!! sense!!” like.. it does. it has meaning and potiential. Furudate doesn’t do this shit for shock value.
